The intent for this artwork was to speak to real WSA students about how they feel towards the new building. I am primarily an illustrator, so I also wanted to put elements of that in the project as well. After workshopping and researching I settled on interviewing students from different courses about Capitol house and placing them in photographs of the route as illustrations. This idea came to me because when I was in college, I was part of creating a small zine. This focused on the college and the different departments, for it I interviewed students about their experiences and created little cartoons of them. I greatly enjoyed this and the focus it had on the current students at the college – giving them a voice and a place to voice their opinions. Creating the illustrations also gave me a voice during a time when I was not as likely to speak up.

As I am now older and my skills have progressed greatly, I want to revisit the essence of that project through this new lens of a major change that affects current and future students – the opening of Capitol House. The final project is a mixed media exploration of how major changes affect students. For the presentation of the interviews themselves, to further communicate the link between students and Capitol House/the route, the words have been inserted into elements along the route through hand drawn illustrations based off of the photographs. This, I hope, makes it so that the students truly feel heard, and that student consideration is being used throughout the entire Capitol House process. Inserting these words into the route is a way of showing this visually.
